Community Foraging Walks are Back!

And why this weekend has me feeling big feelings about building community...

Make friends with the flora, fungi, and our wonderful human community

As I sit in my house surrounded by 5 gallon jugs of water, stacks of blankets, and baskets of battery powered lights, I, like so many of us, have had lots of reminders of all the things we felt leading up to (and, most of all, after) our area being hit by Hurricane Helene. We now we have so much more experience in what we need in those days without power, water, or the ability to move freely around town, but also maybe a bit more anxiety when severe weather warnings come our way.

Today my partner and I sat down to finalize plans - should we hunker down here, preparing for possible days without power in single digit temps? Or drive two hours to a family house, a little isolated up the mountain but with a brand new whole-house generator? We both realized that the thing that made us feel most safe as we made our plans A, B, and C, was knowing that we had community around us - the community we all learned so much about, and experienced the strength of, that week in September.

So we will stay here, hoping for the best but knowing whatever happens we have people around us to turn to, and who we can check in on, too- and it all makes the coming unknown feel a less intimidating.

Beyond the ice and sleet of this weekend, there are so many storms raging around us in this country (and beyond) right now, and I know that in the same way, it is community that gives me the most hope in our ability to band together and survive it- by being here and caring for each other.

This is what inspired the start of Wild Community Walks last spring, and why I am so excited to be opening them again for this year. I hope you can find more time and energy to connect with your neighbors as we navigate these storms, and am thrilled to be able to offer a space for that. Come join us, and spend a little time each week connecting with your human AND more-than-human community. We will practice slowing down and being present together, finding joy even on the hard days, and building relationships with the flora, fungi, and critters all around us.
